Shift Out of Luck | Review

Title: Shift Out of Luck
Series: Brimstone Inc. #2
Author: Abigail Owen
Pages: 150 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Publisher: Entangled: Amara
Release date: 20 April 2020
Rating: ★★★★.5

Synopsis

The Montagues and Capulets have nothing on the Canis and Banes wolf packs. The two have been feuding for ages. The brutal murder of the Banes’ alpha only added fuel to the fire. And now there’s only one way to bring peace – the current alphas of each pack, Marrok and Tala, need a mating of convenience.

Tala has her doubts. A thousand of them.

Never mind that Marrok drives her body to levels of desire her vibrator has trouble keeping up with. If she can’t get her inner wolf – or her people – on board, forget peace, because she’ll lose the tenuous control she has over the Canis pack. Her new mate is just so damn alpha. He’d better learn to play nice or Tala will have to show him who’s boss.

But Marrok has plans of his own, and nothing and no one, not even Tala herself, can resist an alpha…

*This novella was previously self published as The Worse for Were but has undergone a complete re-edit. Scenes were added, things were changed, but the kissing still remains!

Review

This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Entangled Amara!

Shift Out of Luck is the second book in the Brimstone Inc. series and tells the story of Tala and Marrok. Although this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone.

Shift Out of Luck was such a good and fast-paced sequel, I enjoyed every bit of it! It was so nice to finally read some more about Tala and Marrok. You read a few things about them in the first book in the series, and it was so nice that we got their story too!

Tala and Marrok are both alphas which makes it a bit hard for them to be in a relationship. I think that Tala is such an amazing and empowering character. What I also loved about this book was that Abigail Owen wrote about the struggle of being a female alpha, Tala gets questioned a lot and people only see Marrok as an alpha. I also really loved Marrok because he puts a lot of effort in his relationship with Tala and he’s just so cute.

Shift Out of Luck was another amazing book by Abigail Owen and I didn’t expect anything else! She’s an amazing author and I love the worlds she’s created! I’m so excited to read more books set in the Brimstone Inc. series and I hope we’ll get a book about Dahlia!

That's the Way I Loved You | Review

Title: That’s the Way I Loved You
Author: Carrie Aarons
Pages: 250 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Release date: 14 May 2020
Rating: ★★★★.5

Synopsis

Savannah

This town ain’t big enough for the two of us. Which is why I left.

I was determined never to return to Hale, Texas. But when my new life in the Big Apple throws me a curve ball, I have to go back to tie up loose ends. One of those being him.

Jason Whitney was my first everything. Kiss, love, epic heartbreak. He shattered my world once upon a time, and apparently, he’s not done yet.

With old demons lurking around every corner, hightailing it out of my hometown is at the top of my list. Complete my unfinished business, and I get to leave any memory of my country existence behind.

Only, with each day I spend in it, with each moment I spend with him, I’m turning back into the girl who laid in the tall grass and swam in the creek all those years ago.

And I’m not sure that who I was is ready to let me go again.

Jason

We drew a line down the middle, and neither of us has crossed it. That is, until Savannah Reese blew back into our hometown.

The day my high school sweetheart left, she took my whole heart with her. We promised each other forever, made plans that only teenagers could believe in, and crashed and burned on the grandest of scales.

When Savannah last saw me, I was a disgraced high school athlete. All washed up, I took it out on the only person who loved me. Then her world really fell apart, and I was too selfish to care.

Now she’s back, ready to sell the only remaining thing tying us to each other. I’ve been breaking my back for the last ten years not to think about her, not to be reminded of the love we shared.

But now that she’s right here, it’s impossible to forget how we used to be. Or let go of what we still are.

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Carrie Aarons!

That’s the Way I Loved You is a Contemporary second chance Romance about Savannah and Jason.

I’ve read a lot of books by Carrie Aarons and she keeps on writing amazing books! That’s the Way I Loved You was such a good book and I’m a sucker for second chance Romance. The story was really beautiful, it’s not just a love story but it’s also a story about going after your passion and about loss.

I totally get the reason why Savannah left town, it’s been really hard for her and I think she’s a strong character. I love that she fights for what she wants and what she needs. But so does Jason… He’s determined to win Savannah’s heart again and I love that he doesn’t give up. It’s clear that they’re meant for each other but it just wasn’t the right time for them to be together when they were younger.

I think that That’s the Way I Loved You is a beautiful story about finding true love again and it’s also a realistic story. I think a lot of people go through certain things and if you’re really meant to be together you’ll find your way back to each other. I think that this book is another great book by Carrie Aarons and I cannot wait to read some more books by her!

Dear Girl | Review

Title: Dear Girl
Author: Aija Mayrock
Pages: 114 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing
Rating: ★★★.5

Synopsis

From a poet and celebrated spoken-word performer comes a debut poetry collection that takes readers on an empowering, lyrical journey exploring truth, silence, wounds, healing, and the resilience we all share.

Dear Girl is a journey from girlhood to womanhood through poetry
It is the search for truth in silence
The freeing of the tongue
It is deep wounds and deep healing
And the resilience that lies within us
It is a love letter
To the sisterhood

Review

This book was provided by the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing and Netgalley!

Dear Girl is a debut poetry collection about feminism and about becoming a woman. I think it’s a good debut collection and I really like reading poems about feminism. We, women, need to stand together and fight for equality!

you were not born an ember
you were born the flame

I really liked the poems in Dear Girl because I could relate to them and feel the empowering message behind them. I think a lot of us women struggle with a few of the topics that are mentioned in this collection, which makes it a book for every woman.

I know that if this world harms you,
attempts to break you,
you will rise
broken and bruised.
The world is no match
for that flame in your eyes.

Dear Girl was a good poetry collection only too bad that the poems didn’t have titles. I usually make ‘favourite poems’ lists but I couldn’t make one for this collection. But besides that, I really enjoyed this collection!

The Burning Shadow | Review

Title: The Burning Shadow
Series: Origin #2
Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Pages: 431 pages
Version: Paperback
Publisher: Tor Teen
Rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis

When Evelyn Dasher crossed paths with Luc, she was thrown headfirst into the world of the Lux – only to discover that she was already far more involved in their world than she ever suspected.

Because the Luxen aren’t the only ones with a hidden past. There’s a gap in Evie’s memory, lost months of her life and a lingering sense that something happened, something she can’t remember and nobody is willing to tell her. She needs to find out the truth about who she is – and who she was. But every answer she finds only brings up more questions.

Her search for the truth brings her ever closer to Luc, the Origin at the center of it all. He’s powerful, arrogant, inhumanly beautiful, extremely dangerous … and possibly in love with her. But even as Evie falls for him, she can’t help but wonder if his attraction is to her, or to the memory of a girl who no longer exists.

And all the while, a new threat looms: reports of a flu-like, fatal virus that the government insists is being spread by Luxen. A horrifying illness that changes whoever it touches, spreading panic across a country already at its breaking point.

Review

The Burning Shadow is the second book in the Origin series and continues the story of Evie and Luc. Origin is a spin-off series of the Lux series, but you don’t have to read the Lux series to be able to read the Origin series.

The Burning Shadow was yet another amazing book by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I’m kind of ashamed to admit that I had it on my shelf for a while and I don’t know why I waited this long to read this book?! The Burning Shadow was such a good book and I just love reading about Luc and Evie, and the other characters from the Origin and Lux series!

Evie’s been through a lot and she discovered some secrets in The Darkest Star, but she was definitely not prepared for all the secrets in The Burning Shadow. So much happened in TBS and I don’t know how she’s still able to deal with all that stuff. She’s such a strong character and I just love her. Luc, my handsome origin, I cannot get enough of him. He’s just so funny and weird, and just perfect for Evie!

So many crazy things happened in The Burning Shadow and I just really need the sequel, like right now. I have so many questions, there were so many secrets and crazy stories… The Burning Shadow is just such an addictive read and it was hard to put this book down. But I didn’t expect anything else from one of my favourite authors. I also really liked the Marvel, Harry Potter etc. references, it was just so cute!

Rebel Rising | Review

Title: Rebel Rising
Series: Cage of Lies #1
Author: Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Release date: 10 April 2020
Rating: ★★★★★

Synopsis

I live in a cage.
This city is a lie.
And I’m done following the rules.

No one knows what lurks beyond The Wall.

Only criminals are sent into the wastelands to face the Lawless Trials and I never thought I’d find myself fighting amongst the ruthless convicts who live in the shadows of society.

But the more rules I break, the more secrets I unveil.

Like the fact that not everyone beyond The Wall was killed by the contamination a hundred years ago.

Some of them became something...else.

I got too close to the truth and now I have no choice but to play their twisted games or else risk the contamination beyond the borders of the arena.

So when a wild man offers me the possibility of a new life in the ravished world, I have to take it.

Coal Carson is like no man I’ve ever met. He’s strong, savage, fierce and the freedom that shines in his dark eyes calls to me like nothing I’ve ever known.

A life with him is wrought with danger, but also hope...and maybe even love.

But the Guardians won’t let me run for long. They’re coming to destroy me before I uncover the truth they’ve spent so long disguising. And I’ll do whatever it takes to stay ahead of them.

But with the full force of the city coming for me, I might just have to find a way to fight back.

Review

This book was provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Caroline Peckham & Susanne Valenti!

Rebel Rising is the first book in the Cage of Lies series and tells the story of Maya, Coal and their friends.

When I started reading Rebel Rising, I immediately had some Divergent and The Hunger Games vibes and I loved it! Divergent and THG are two of my favourite Dystopian series and Rebel Rising is definitely one of my favourite Dystopian books! The story is just so interesting and it’s also different from what I’m used to from Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti!

We mainly read in Maya’s perspective, and I loved it! She’s such a badass character, and she has to deal with a lot of things since going to the Lawless Trials. We also got one chapter in Coal’s, Hunter’s, Alicia’s and Laurie’s perspective. I really liked getting to know the characters and their thoughts. Maya is definitely my favourite character and I cannot wait to get to know Coal better! I also have a feeling that I’m going to love Hunter in the other books.

It’s been a while since I read some Dystopian books and that’s mainly because Paranormal Romance and Fantasy are getting a lot of attention at the moment, but I do enjoy reading Dystopian books. It was so fun reading a Dystopian book again, and Rebel Rising was such an amazing and addictive read. I cannot wait for the next book in the Cage of Lies series!

Star Wars IX and Avengers: Endgame were amazing movies but also sad ones. I'm not going to write something about the other movies but I want to say that Fantastic Beasts II was a disappointment...

Priestess of Stoms & Stones | Release day blitz

Title: Priestess of Storms & Stone
Series: Rogue Ethereal #5
Author: Annie Anderson
Release date: 31 March 2020

Synopsis

If there is one lesson I’ve been taught in my life, it’s that fairies are the absolute worst.

Finding a fledgling succubus in Faerie is like locating a needle inside a realm-sized haystack. With a guide I can’t trust and a goal more ephemeral than smoke, my odds of success are tenuous at best. Not to mention, as the last Elemental in existence, I have a giant target painted on my back.

Because one half of Faerie wants me dead, and the other half wants to use me as a sacrifice to open the gates to Earth. But I swore I would find my quarry, and I will. Even if I have to rip the entire realm apart to do it.

There is a storm coming to Faerie. And that storm is me.

Review

Priestess of Storms & Stone is the fifth book in the Rogue Ethereal series and continues the story of Max and her friends.

It was no surprise that I was going to love Priestess of Storms & Stone because the Rogue Ethereal series is just amazing. I really like the world Annie Anderson’s created because I love a good series with a lot of supernatural characters. On top of that, she made a badass female protagonist with a sexy love interest… You’re just destined to fall in love with this series!

I just cannot get enough of Max. She’s been through so much and discovers even more secrets in Priestess of Storms & Stone and she keeps being a badass female and she keeps saying everything that’s on her mind. I LOVE HER! And Alistair is still my number one, he’s just the perfect husband for her and I keep imagining his sexy British voice when I read ‘love’.

A lot of things happened in Priestess of Storms & Stone and a lot is going to happen in the next book, I’m sure. The way Annie Anderson ended Priestess of Storms & Stone was really evil and I just need the next book ASAP!

About the author
Annie Anderson is a military wife and United States Air Force veteran. Originally from Dallas, Texas, she is a southern girl at heart, but has lived all over the US and abroad. As soon as the military stops moving her family around, she'll settle on a state, but for now she enjoys being a nomad with her husband, two daughters, an old man of a dog, and a young pup that makes life... interesting.

Internship update #1

Internship update VDL KTI
It’s already the seventh week of my internship, so I wanted to give you guys a little update on how everything is going.

I started my internship at VDL KTI on the 17th of February and (normally) I’ll end my internship on the 15th of May. I was really nervous the first day of my internship, but everyone is really kind and now I feel at ease there. VDL KTI is a small company and is part of a bigger company called VDL Groep. I really like that VDL KTI is a small company because there’s no hierarchy, you can easily talk to the boss the same way you talk to your coworkers. I really like that because it’s less stressful for me and my anxiety.

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6637629445396017152Let’s talk about what I do. Every Monday I help the receptionist with answering the telephone, checking invoices, entering employee hours, making sure the meeting room is set, and other small things. From Tuesday to Friday, I work in the Sales Department. There I’m in charge of communication and marketing, such as the website, social media, updating an old brochure, and some other things. I really like that I have a variety of tasks that I can do so I’m not always doing the same thing. It’s also just something that I really like to do because I’m always busy with social media and my blog.

My internship has also helped me with answering the phone and talking to people I don’t know. Don’t get me wrong, I still get a little nervous, but everything is going better and better. It also helps that the employees are so kind and helpful because I’m not afraid to ask questions. And the employees that I don’t work with are always asking me how I’m doing or if I like my internship, etc. and that’s just amazing. I don’t dread waking up in the morning at 6:15 am just because my internship makes me happy.

Until March 16th… I started working at my usual spot at the reception together with the receptionist and my internship mentor told me that I had to go home because of the corona measures. I was kind of sad that I had to work from home because my internship makes me feel so good and at home, I usually don’t feel that good. And I totally get that because of corona I have to work at home, I get that, but it doesn’t make it less painful. I just really liked going to my internship and I just hope that the virus will go away soon so I can go to my internship again.

I want to end this blog post on a positive note because I’ve been trying to feel more positive. I’ve mentioned in one of my previous life update posts that my mental health hasn’t been that great because of school and fake friends. Now that I’ve been going to my internship for a few weeks, my mental health has been improving. I don’t think that often about my awful and stressy times at school anymore and I also don’t think that often about the fake friends anymore. Yay!

April Bullet Journal set up

April’s theme is really pretty, and I think it’s my favourite one so far. I bought this special paper bundle from Action, and I used the space/star sign ones. I really like this set up because it’s a bit more creative than just stickers and I put a lot more effort in these spreads.

You can find all my previous Bullet Journal posts here.

The first page is my monthly overview together with my ‘to do’ and ‘to read’ list.

Then we have my weekly spreads. Just like last month, I decided to put a mini habit tracker on my weekly spreads. It saves me a lot of time and I think it gives an overview of why I did or did not do something. I used 2 different kinds of special paper for my weekly spreads to spice it up.

And the last two pages are the monthly wrap up and a blank page that I filled up with the special paper.

I hope you guys liked this Bullet Journal post. If you did, feel free to pin this post on Pinterest!

Good thing he won’t see what’s coming next.

Review

This book was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Entangled: Amara!

Fury Unleashed is the first book in the Forgotten Brotherhood series and tells the story of Maccus and Morrigan.

What first intrigued me about this book was the cover. The dark wings and the handsome guy… I just had to know what this book was about. The story sounded so interesting and it didn’t disappoint! I really liked the story and the characters, it was such an original take on angels and demons. The only problem I had was something with the pacing. I cannot really explain it but that was the thing that bothered me a bit.

Maccus is such a mysterious character and you want to know what is going through his head. I really liked the multiple perspectives because you had the chance to read about Maccus’ thoughts. Morrigan is such a badass woman, and I love her for that. She’s fierce and a fighter, and just perfect for Maccus! They’re a match made in heaven, if you know what I mean lol.

Fury Unleashed is a good first book in a new series about angels and demons. I really liked the story and characters in general and I’m really excited for the next book in the Forgotten Brotherhood series.

Taking Anna | Release day blitz

Title: Taking Anna

HIM
Colt Atwood is going places, leaving the small town of Dillon Creek in his past after tragedy strikes. Anywhere but home, he searches for ways to fix the holes where the wind blows through him—and he fails time and time again.
It isn’t until Colt gets injured and returns home to face his family, his brothers, and the reasons he left in the first place that he realizes that only she can fix the wind.

HER
It was easy for Anna Cain to leave Dillon Creek for college in the city. After she and Colt made love and he left, she needed something to take her away from the only place she’s ever known.
Anna doesn’t expect to go back home to Dillon Creek, but when she’s made an offer she can’t refuse, she knows she has to take it. Go back to face the pieces of her broken family, to the tragedy she left behind, and him—the only man who always said she was more.
Will Colt and Anna be able to repair what went so terribly wrong, or will go down in the storm they started all those years ago?

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you J. Lynn Bailey!

Taking Anna is the first book in the Dillon Creek series and tells the story of Anna and Colt.

When I heard that J. Lynn Bailey was coming out with a new series, I was so excited! I loved the Granite Harbor series and I knew that I was going to like this series too. Although it took me a bit to get into the story, I really liked this book and I couldn’t get enough of Anna and Colt.

Anna and Colt have a history together and now that they’re older and both back in Dillon Creek, they cannot ignore their history. Anna is such a kind and loving person but she’s also blind. She doesn’t realise what Colt feels for her. Colt is a handsome and (really) tall guy who cannot deny his feeling for Anna. I really loved reading chapters about them from in the past and present. You really get to know their friendship and their love for each other.

Taking Anna was yet another amazing book by J. Lynn Bailey. The book was well written and fast paced, and I had to know how the story was going to end. I really liked this book and I cannot wait to read the next book in the Dillon Creek series, Saving Tess.

About the author
J. Lynn is a bestselling author who hates to talk about herself. Loathes it. More importantly, she's the mother of two beautiful children and a wife to her high school sweetheart. She's also a mother of two extremely needy cats, Leo and Vinni, and an Australian Shepherd named Grizz. She lives with her family in a small town tucked away in the redwood forest, located on California's northern coast.

This Passover is starting to feel like the ten plagues might be coming back to haunt them before the weekend is over … one hilarious misstep after the next.

Gaby Fineberg just wants to get through Passover Seder without her ‘well meaning’ family playing matchmaker. She needs a date, just for one simple meal – that includes singing, the history of her forefathers, and not one bit of yeast. The hot guy at her gym would be perfect. He probably hates bread, anyway, with a body like that. But when she finally works up the nerve to ask him … he doesn’t hear a word she said.

Levi Miller is deaf and happily single. Initially, he doesn’t know why this beautiful woman is talking to him, but it’s clear she needs help – and suddenly so does he. In a very complicated situation, Levi finds a simple solution. Gaby will pretend to be his new girlfriend to bail him out, and he’ll return the favor. But he didn’t bargain for a family dinner quite like this one…

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Entangled: Lovestruck!

Matzah Ball Surprise is a standalone Romance book about Gaby and Levi.

Since I read Maybe Someday by Colleen Hoover, I’ve always been fascinated by deaf people and sign language. I’ve never really read or watched anything about the deaf community and that book was really eye-opening for me. When I saw that Entangled: Lovestruck is going to publish a book about someone falling in love with a deaf person, I just had to request an arc! Matzah Ball Surprise was such a good book and I enjoyed reading about Gaby and Levi!

Gaby just had a breakup but she needs a date for her family event… Levi doesn’t want to spend his weekend with his family… And then they meet each other… Gaby and Levi are just meant to be together. They’re just so cute together and I love that Gaby is trying to learn ASL specially for Levi. I just couldn’t get enough of them together!

Matzah Ball Surprise was such an enjoyable Romance read and I loved reading about Gaby and Levi. Although this is a good book, the ending was a bit abrupt. I would’ve liked one or two chapters after the last chapter. But besides that, the book was really good! I cannot wait to read more books by Laura Brown.

About the Author
Kristy Fairlamb is an Australian author of the Young Adult Lucid series coming out in 2019.

She spends her days drinking coffee and torturing her characters with loads of tension – both love related and the nail biting kind.

Long before her days of writing began she spent half her childhood in a make believe world; daydreaming about growing up, falling in love, and travelling the world.

She’s worked as a nanny in country England, a junior matron in a boy’s boarding school south of London, a governess in East Timor, and made coffees and cleared tables in the New South Wales snow fields.

She lives with her husband, teenage daughter, and two sons in the beautiful Adelaide Hills where they’re lucky enough to get occasional visits from the local koalas.

She’s terrible at gardening, likes her bookshelves sorted by colour, and recently checked off a lifelong dream of jumping from a plane.

When she’s not writing or daydreaming about her stories you’ll find her reading, cooking for her family, or doing anything to avoid the housework.

Synopsis

When my best friend died of cancer just before her eighteenth birthday, she left her coveted bucket list to me.

The things she already crossed off? Skinny dipping, going to Paris, completing the local hot wing challenge, road tripping to the ocean, and sending out a message in a bottle.

So, it falls on me to finish it for her, to honor her memory. In the next year, it’s my mission to:

1. Dye my hair
2. Have sex
3. Camp out in a tent
4. Go bungee jumping
5. Get revenge on Lincoln Kolb

Most are doable, some terrify me, and then there is the last item on the list. When the raven-haired football god dumped my best friend during senior year of high school, she was devastated. The jerk with charm for days found out she was sick, and betrayed her in the worst way possible.

But he doesn’t know me, I went to went to school a town over. Now, to fulfill my promise, I’m the newest freshman on the campus where he is the big man. If there is one thing, aside from cheap beer, that a jock can’t pass up, it’s a shiny new girl.

So when I catch his eye, play hard to get, and then fall into his bed, I know my scheme is working to perfection. But what Lincoln can’t see coming is the beatdown I have planned for his ice-cold heart.

Unfortunately, what I never saw coming was the one he had planned for mine.

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Carrie Aarons!

Fool Me Twice is a standalone Contemporary Romance about Henley and Lincoln.

Fool Me Twice is one of my favourite books by Carrie Aarons. When I started this book, it was really hard to put it down. I really loved the concept of this book and I had to know what was going to happen to the characters. You know that something bad is going to happen and you just don’t want it to happen…

I really loved the characters in Fool Me Twice. Henley knows what she wants and I love her for that. I also love her passion for photography. Lincoln… When Carrie Aarons first described him in the book, she was literally describing my dream man. Long brown hair and two different eye colours?! HELL YES! I also love that he’s invested in his cousins and that he’s a cancer survivor. They’re just a match made in heaven!

Fool Me Twice was such a good book and I highly recommend it! I couldn’t stop reading and I just loved the story! I’ve never read a book like this one and that made me enjoy it even more. The story was just so good and I loved the characters! I cannot wait for the next amazing book by Carrie Aarons!
