October favourites

Books
  • Soft Thorns by Bridgett Devoue*
Soft Thorns was the first poetry collection that I’ve read by Bridgett Devoue and it was such a beautiful one! I could relate to so many poems and it was just wow!
  • Someday Soon (Not Yet #3) by Laura Ward*
I was trying to complete my Netgalley TBR pile and Someday Soon was one of the books that was on this list. I already knew that I was going to like this book because of the synopsis and when I finished it, I didn’t just like it, I loved it!
  • Wild Child by A.S. Green*
Wild Child was yet another amazing New Adult book that I read this month. Wild Child was such a beautiful story, and I couldn’t stop reading it.
  • Secrets of a Broken Heart by Lee Martens*
Secrets of a Broken Heart was another beautiful poetry collection that I read this month. It was so nice to read a poetry collection from someone closer to my country, because Lee Martens is from the Netherlands.
  • Limits by Susie Tate*
I really love reading books about mental illnesses and this was one of the best ones I’ve read so far. Limits tells the story of someone who suffers from anxiety so it was really relatable and also such an inspiring story!
  • Faking It (Losing It #2) by Cora Carmack
Faking It was one of the books I recently bought and finally had the time to read it. I really liked this story because it was fun and quick. To be honest, I read a lot of good New Adult books this month haha!

The books with ‘*’ will have a review that will be up somewhere in November!

Food & Drinks
  • Momade Cupcakes
The last Monday of October I went to Antwerp with my best friend, and we ate some delicious cupcakes. I ate one with some Halloween decorations, and she ate a normal one. I really loved my cupcake and Momade Cupcakes just makes the best cupcakes ever!

  • Del Popolo Pizza
Like I mentioned above, I went to Antwerp with my best friend and we ate one of the best pizza ever! I mean, look at the picture!!!

Make-up
  • Essence Halloween blogger mail
I was having such a shitty day and then my mum called me and said I received a package from Happy Life PR. When she opened it for me and told me what was inside the package, I was so happy! I love Halloween and I love Essence products so this was one of the best blogger mail I’ve ever got! So thanks again Happy Life PR and Essence!

  • Catrice Brow Pro Pen
In August I got another package from Happy Life PR with the Catrice Bam Brow Limited Edition Brow Serum and Brow Pro Pen. I wasn’t really a fan of the serum but I love using the Brow Pro Pen because it’s just so amazing and the perfect shade, I have shade CO1 Golden Beige.
  • Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Concealer
At the beginning of this month, I bought this concealer and I couldn’t stop using it. The Nyx HD Photogenetic Concealer used to be my favourite concealer but this one is so much better! I love the formula and the Makeup Revolution concealer is cheaper and just better! For those that are interested, I use the shade C2 (for once I don’t have the lightest shade haha!)

Movies
  • Venom
I’m a huge Marvel fan, so its obvious that I had to include Venom to my favourites. Venom was such a cool movie and I couldn’t stop laughing! When the movie is out on DVD or on Netflix, I will definitely watch it again and again!

TV shows
  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
I watched the first episode of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and I immediately knew that I was going to love every episode! So far I’m at episode 5 and I have to stop myself from binge watching it. I want to watch one episode a day because I don’t want this season to be over. It’s just so good and I highly recommend it!

Saving Death | Review

Title: Saving Death
Author: R.L. Endean
Pages: 301 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Publisher: Oftomes Publishing
Release date: 5 November 2018
Rating: ★★★★

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Oftomes!

Saving Death tells the story of Ava and Sam. Ava’s mother passed away so she has to live with her dad. When she meets a handsome stranger, everything changes. She’s drawn to him, and Ava doesn’t know why.

Saving Death was such an original and interesting story. I’ve never read a story about reapers, which made it even more interesting. Saving Death was also a fast-paced read, I read it in a few days and there were many times that I couldn’t stop reading because I had to know the truth and what was going to happen to the characters.

I really liked Ava and Sam. They were both so realistic and interesting. I’ve dealt with loss myself so I could easily relate to what Ava was going through. I really liked how mysterious Sam was and I wanted to know more about him.

Saving Death was such an amazing book and I cannot wait to read more by R.L. Endean!

Essence Halloween blogger mail

Every year, I look forward to Essence’s Halloween collection but sadly they didn’t create one this year. But, luckily for me, a Dutch PR company called HappyLife PR sent me a box full of Essence make-up and candy!

I was having a really difficult day when my mum texted me that I received a package. I wasn’t expecting anything, so asked my mum to open the package and she told me that it was a cauldron with some make-up and candy. I was so happy because I love Halloween and I really like Essence products.

The products that I received are:
  • My Only 1 Eyeshadow Palette in 01 22 Eye-catching Looks
  • Electric Vibes Liner in 01 Staywild
  • Super Last Eyeliner Matt Black
  • I Love Extreme Volume Mascara
  • Colour Boost Mad About Matte Liquid Lipstick in 07 Seeing Red
  • The Gel Nail Polish in 46 Black is Black

I really like that these products are so different. You have something for your nails as well as something for your eyes and lashes. You can make so many different looks with these products, and I cannot wait to play with them. I already have some looks on my mind that I want to create with the coral-red liner and lipstick.

I want to end this blog post by thanking HappyLife PR and Essence for sending me such a wonderful package and I cannot wait to try out these products!

Vampire look | Tutorial

Sadly, this is already my last tutorial. I’m kinda sad that it’s almost Halloween because we don’t really celebrate Halloween. I never have the chance to dress up and make my face scary, which makes me kinda sad. Creating these Halloween looks the past couple of weeks, made me really happy and made me feel very creative. I’m already excited for next year haha!

For my last look, I have a vampire look for you guys. I really like vampires, I love reading books about them and watching movies about them. They’re definitely one of my favourite supernatural creatures, so I hope you guys like this look!

1. The first thing I did for this look was painting my face white. I’m already really pale, but I wanted to make it even paler.

2. The second step is the eyeshadow. I went for a lot of black eyeshadow because vampires are really dark.

3. Vampires always drink blood so that’s why I wanted to give this look a hint of red.

4. I went for black eyeliner to make this look a bit darker. This step is not necessary.

5. Some vampires get red veins in their eyes so that’s why I decided to use a red eyeliner in my waterline. Then I smudged it a bit with some black eyeshadow.

6. I got these bat lashes two years ago and I really like the effect of them. They are perfect for this look! (I also made my eyebrows darker by putting on some black eyeshadow.)

7. I decided to go with some highlighter because I cannot live without my highlighter haha! I also used a black eyeshadow as a contour/bronzer.

8. And the last step is lips. I went for black lips with blood.

Lurking in the Woods | Review

Title: Lurking in the Woods
Series: Beyond the Veil #1
Author: Anne Stryker
Pages: 207 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Rating: ★★★★

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Anne Stryker!

Lurking in the Woods tells the story of Bryn and Rhyeos. Bryn loves travelling but she quits travelling for a while to check out her grandma’s cabin. She always thought that her grandma’s ramblings about magic were stupid until she meets Rhy.

Lurking in the Woods was such an interesting and original read because Anne Stryker created this whole new world with a lot of fantasy/supernatural creatures such as unicorns, fairies as well as an oracle and a werewolf.

The characters in Lurking in the Woods were interesting as well because you have Bryn and Rhy. Bryn is just human, but she’s definitely more than just human. She sacrifices herself to save a kingdom full of ‘people’ she doesn’t know. Rhy is definitely the most interesting one because you don’t really know him, but at the same time, you can’t stop laughing with him. And then there’s this special thing about him, which is a gigantic spoiler, so I’m not going to tell you, that really fascinated me!

Lurking in the Woods was definitely an amazing fantasy read and I cannot wait to read the sequel!

A.M. Salinger
Publication date: August 21st 2018
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
I have a problem. His name is Lincoln “Asshole” Hudson. He’s the bastard who wants to run me out of town. I should hate him. Trouble is, Lincoln is my type. Like one hundred and ten percent. And, ladies, he has the biggest, er, package I’ve ever seen on a man — Eveline
I have an itch I want to scratch. Her name is Eveline “Sassy Mouth” Claude. She’s the woman standing in the way of what could be my most lucrative project yet. Eveline is my enemy. There’s one hitch: she’s the hottest thing on legs my dick has ever seen — Lincoln
When Eveline Claude discovers she doesn’t actually own the land on which her most successful club stands, she is determined to get it back from the man who has now laid claim to it. Unfortunately, Lincoln Hudson, the new landlord and über successful billionaire behind the Hudson Group, doesn’t want to play ball.
Lincoln Hudson is in Tokyo for a landmark deal that could help secure his company’s foothold in the Far East and expand his hotel business in a new and exciting direction. The only hiccup is, someone else thinks they own the prime piece of land he’s just bought. And that someone is a woman he very much wants to bed.
After Lincoln convinces Eveline into becoming his personal escort for the duration of his stay in Tokyo in exchange for considering leasing her the land, the two of them come to a mutual agreement; they will enjoy each other—socially and carnally—until such a time that their arrangement comes to an end.
But as their time together draws to a close, Eveline and Lincoln discover that they have more in common than just great sex. Will they let their business affairs sour what is growing between them? Or will they put aside their differences and accept that enemies they may have started as, but lovers is what they’re meant to become?
Discover Eveline and Lincoln’s story in this sexy and wickedly funny addition to the hot, contemporary romance series Nights by A.M. Salinger. Note from the author: although each book in Nights can be read as a standalone, you will enjoy this series even more if you read the books in order!
This is a novella length MF romance with a HEA.

This book was provided by the author through Xpresso Book Tours in exchange for an honest review. Thank you A.M. Salinger and Xpresso Book Tours!

Undisclosed tells the story of Eveline and Lincoln. Eveline discovers she doesn’t own the land where her successful club is situated. She’s determined to get it back, but she didn’t know that a very sexy man named Lincoln owns it now…

Undisclosed was such a good steamy romance, and I really enjoyed reading it. It was just another amazing romance written by A.M. Salinger. I really liked that there were so rougher sex scenes as well as some BDSM. I don’t always read BDSM so it was a nice change and I really liked those scenes.

I really liked Eveline because she was such a strong female character and even though she’s been through a lot, she’s so strong and confident. She was such an enjoyable character, and I really liked her. Lincoln was also such a fun character, he was so charming and sexy but also so sweet.

I cannot wait to read the other books in the Night Series and I’m really interested in the m/m books since I haven’t read a lot of m/m yet!

This or that Halloween tag with Amelinda Bérubé

Welcome to the First Annual “Trick or Treat” Blog Tour hosted by Moonlit Reads! This tour is the first to come of many. It takes place during the last 13 days of October leading up to Halloween Day. Trick or treat along the tour finding giveaways, interviews, blurbs, and more! You can find the start of the tour and its schedule here! Now, let the spooky begin!

First a few questions for Amelinda Bérubé:

1. Your author bio reads, "I write about ghosts and monsters and other things that go bump in the night." There are all sorts of urban legends that give life to these ghosts and monsters...if you could write from an urban legend prompt, what would it be?
Can you give a short premise of it? Give me a big old haunted building any day. Somewhere people have been known to disappear, that's bigger on the inside than it ought to be, that people emerge from with inexplicable blanks in their memories, that isn't always in the same place... I, um, may or may not have something up my sleeve along these lines for NaNoWriMo.

2. It seems people have a hard time surviving in horror movies. If you were dropped down into a horror film, what would be your game plan for surviving?
I don't think my chances of surviving a horror movie would be very high - especially not if a lot of running or fighting was involved! If I found myself beset by supernatural forces, I would definitely start by using my Google-fu to figure out what local mythology could be in play, what terrible crimes were committed in the vicinity, and so forth...and failing that, I'd be breaking out iron, salt, running water, all the classic defenses against things that go bump in the night. But that's assuming whatever's coming after me is playing by traditional rules...

3.Create a Halloween aesthetic for The Dark Beneath the Ice (can be a pinterest board, a few pictures, a few sentences, or a mix)
I came across this video of literal dancing on knives - "En Puntas" by Javier Pérez - while I was working on revisions for the book; it combines a few of the motifs I played with in a really riveting and evocative way. I think it really captures a feeling of rigid self control, terrifyingly high stakes, and increasing, barely restrained panic and exhaustion, all of which was part of the atmosphere I was aiming for. What the dancer shouts around the two minute mark is je te deteste! - I hate you!

And let's check out Amelinda's answers for the This or That Halloween tag!

1. Witches of Vampires?
Ooh, vampires, please. Especially the truly scary historical kind that sprang from people's terror of contagion.

2. Trick or Treat?
Treats - chocolate, for preference, and lots of em!

3. Halloween Party or Scary Movie?
Scary movie. I'm a hopeless introvert.

4. Skeletons or Zombies?
Zombies - way grosser and scarier!

5. Trick-or-Treat or Hand Out Candy?
Can I hide in the basement with the above-mentioned scary movie instead?

6. Hay Ride or Corn Maze?
Corn maze, way scarier!

7. Bottle Feed A Baby Zombie or Walk Alone Through A Dark Forest?
A baby zombie sounds SUPER upsetting, so I'd definitely pick the dark forest.

8. Pumpkin Spice or hot Chocolate?
Chocolate will win any battle for my heart.

Clown look | Tutorial

My third look is a clown look. I wanted to create a clown look that was simple because I’m all for a cool Halloween look that’s easy to recreate. Diana and I both created a clown look, only hers is in colour and mine is in black and white. One of our friends came up with the idea of doing a collab so that’s what we did! I’m really happy with our looks, so I hope you guys are too!
Make sure to check out Diana’s look, blog and social media!

Let’s begin with the tutorial!

1. It’s always easy to sketch with a white pencil instead of going straight in with the paint. You can always use a nude or light pink pencil if you don’t have a white one.

2. After sketching, you can fill in the collar.

3. I wanted to give the collar something extra so that’s why I created these little dots.

4. I was inspired by Pennywise from It, so that’s why I extended my smile all the way up to my eyebrows.

5. For eyes, I decided to go with a smokey look. First I applied the gel liner on my eyelid and blended it with a black eyeshadow. As you can see in the next step, I darkened my eyebrows. I did this with the same black eyeshadow.

6. For lashes, I went with two pairs. The half lashes were for my bottom lashes, and the full lashes were for my upper lashes.

7. And the final step is lipstick. I applied black lipsticks on my lips and then softened the edges with black eyeshadow.

And that’s it!

Salt & Venom | Review

Title: Salt & Venom
Series: Blood, Bloom & Water #2
Author: Amy McNulty
Pages: 227 pages
Version: Ebook (ARC)
Publisher: Snowy Wings Publishing
Rating: ★★★★

Review

This book was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Amy McNulty!

Salt & Venom focuses on Ivy’s story as the mermaid champion. Ivy never wanted to be the mermaid champion, but she had to because her step-sister is the vampire champion.

Salt & Venom is the second book in the Blood, Bloom & Water series and I really liked this one. I even think that this book is better than the first book, Fangs & Fins. I remember not really liking the double perspective and Salt & Venom is only in Ivy’s perspective.

I think that the pace of this book was faster than Fangs & Fins, and I really enjoyed reading it. I read this story pretty quickly because I kept on reading because I really liked it, and I didn’t have that feeling with Fangs & Fins.

I also want to mention the epic plot twist at the end of the book. I really didn’t see it coming and I thought this book was going to end differently. I still hope that somehow everyone can accept each other and live next to each other. But who knows?

Salt & Venom was an amazing sequel and I cannot wait to read Iron & Aqua!

Excerpt

Silly dreamer

Silly dreamer,
Can't seem to stop.
Your mind drew you a ceiling,
your heart just keeps going up.

Author bio
Lee Martens is a 24-year old poet from the Netherlands. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Culture and a Master of Arts in Scriptwriting. She works for American publishing company Secret Midnight Press as a social media manager, as well as for a couple of different other brands. Her writing is usually realistic and to the point; she's as straight-forward as most Dutch people are. But underneath that, there's also a deeper layer of forever wishing for more, dreams so big she hardly dares to speak them.
